Ghost Lake Lodge is one of the oldest historic resorts still in operation in the Hayward Lakes area of Wisconsin, built on the south shore of Ghost Lake in 1935. It is located inside the Chequamegon National Forest that covers more than 850,000 acres. The Chequamegon is a special place that also happens to be home to a thriving elk population. Elk were first reintroduced to the area in 1995 and sometimes even make their way through the resort. Ghost Lake is also part of Wisconsin's only 'Quiet Lakes'. This means a true peace and quiet, no speed boats or jet skis disturbing the peace. The Quiet Lakes have a 10 mile per hour speed limit, which offers a unique experience if you are looking for a day on the lake fishing or canoeing without wanting to share the water with other lake activities. If you are looking for a wilderness vacation, and a feeling of what "Up North" has meant to generations, then look no further than Ghost Lake Lodge.

A Fishing Destination

Ghost Lake is 372 acres in size and is a shallow flowage with a maximum depth of 12', with most of the lake less than 8 feet deep.  Approximately 80% of the 7.5 miles of shoreline are part of the Chequamegon National Forest, and 95% of the forest is undeveloped.  There is a 10 mph speed limit on the lake.  Ghost Lake is considered a Class A Musky Lake.  The waters of Ghost Lake are stained copper colored due to the tannic acid of the cedar and tamarack swamps in the headwaters, which are in the Chequamegon National Forest.  The water from our lake forms Ghost Creek, which flows into the West Fork of the Chippewa River on the south side of US Hwy 77.  The West Fork of the Chippewa River flows into Moose Lake, and then into the Chippewa Flowage.

In addition to the great fishing here on Ghost Lake, there are over 600 lakes and 60 trout waters within one hour of the lodge, (including Lake Superior), truly offering endless opportunities to the angler.

Use the convenient boat launch on site, or rent one of our fishing boats or pontoons.  Fishing licenses can be purchased on line from the WDNR and are also available at any license vendor.  Locally they can be purchased from the Happy Hooker Bait and Tackle.

Is Ghost Lake Lodge for you?

Ghost Lake Lodge is not for everyone.  DON'T look for

  • A 5 Star resort with all the bells and whistles
  • A lodge with modern cabins with squared corners and level floors
  • Cabins and rooms with the latest appliances and furniture.
  • A lodge with cell phone service (none here) and wifi in each cabin.  (It's a good excuse to go up to the lodge to catch a signal)
